The Office of Clergy
Personnel has the important task of staffing the parishes and offices in the
Diocese with priests and deacons. Our office also develops and maintains a
policy and procedures manual to aid clergy in their positions.
The greatest challenge facing our office is one that affects the whole Church:
over the past decade, the number of active diocesan priests have dropped — the
result of deaths and smaller ordination classes. Today 172 diocesan priests are
in parish assignments, compared to 200 in 1990.
The office endeavors to make the truth known about this decline so that the
Diocese can begin the difficult process of planning accordingly. Creative
restructuring on every level will be necessary so that the Church can fulfill
its mission of living and preaching the Gospel.
